| On Monday night, as I walked home from work, I passed this bar. The tvs were turned up really loud, and instead of the usual smooth jazz band they had playing, the president's address was on. People were gathered on the steps outisde the bar, watching, but I just kept walking. And as I crossed the walkway that cuts through the Christian Science Center on my way home, I couldn't help but thinking that this is one on the moments in my life that I will inevitably tell my children about. And then I thought about the other important news events I would be telling my children about. The Persian Gulf. Oklahoma City. September 11th. I've read some stuff lately where people have likened Hussein to Hitler, and said this would be World War 3. This will never be World War 3. To have a world war, you need the rest of the world participating, and most countries refuse to support us (or Iraq) in this venture. Also, Hussein is not Hitler. Hitler moved quickly, and his reign was short compared to Hussein. It was Hitler's goal to rule the world. If that were Hussein's goal, he could have done it a long time ago. Also, Hitler created massive armies. World War 2 was fought to defeat and remove these armies. It was not a war set out to kill Hitler. It isn't as if after you fight all these battles and walk over the piles of Iraqi soldiers corpses, Hussein will be at the back holding a bull horn, and we will be able to put a bullet in him, and all of a sudden, the sun will come out, and little Disney animals will frolic through the war torn countryside, leaving daisies everywhere they step. There are hundreds of people who could take his place. In order to fully remove the threat in Iraq, there would have to be a lengthy occupation, which is not wanted by either side. I believe the president is a moron. I believe that Hussein has only started again posing a significant threat since Bush decided to avenge the attempt on his father's life. I believe that more than anything, this war is a way to distract the American public away from the areas Bush has failed in. Our economy is so pathetic right now. We're about to turn into a third world country. Bush is also making steps to get rid of things most people care about or believe in, like the environment, or a woman's right to choose. Also, nothing has happened about September 11th. I can't help but think that right now, as our attention is focused on this impending war, Osama Bin Laden is in a cave somewhere designing something to really fuck us up. I have, for the majority of my life, believed in my country. Now though, as hard as I try, I believe that we are in the wrong, and I am scared. I haven't bought saran wrap or duct tape yet, but I am concerned with my safety and the safety of the people who live here and I don't believe our country can protect us. |
